2009: Smooth Season, Challenging Numbers

Fun times, faithful ministry, fine staff, facilities upgrades, reduced fire risks, no trips to the doctor with campers, good weather, completion of our seven-year Fire Risk Reduction Project with water system improvements: it all contributed to a camping season that flowed smoothly and well, giving so much for which to be thankful.

The season also held some summary statistics reflecting trends that pose challenges to Christikon as it moves ahead. For example, the number of youth campers has been declining over the years, particularly among those who come from outside the camp’s member congregation area.

Many factors are undoubtedly part of the statistical trends. Included may be these:

In many Lutheran congregations there are fewer youth of camping age than there once were.

  • There are more summer possibilities for youth groups and for individuals to consider. For example, many more congregational youth groups are doing "mission trips" rather than utilizing camping opportunities. Like so many camps, we have seen major dips in the years of the ELCA national youth gathering (including 2009).
  • Many educators lament the decreasing outdoor experience children typically have, citing the need for re-connecting young people with the natural world.
  • The national economic downturn may have impact on camp participation.
  • In family/adult camping, numbers were also down in 2009, though trends the past few years suggest there are significant opportunities for increased ministries with families and adults.

The Christikon Board and leadership continue to seek further ways faithfully and creatively to meet the challenges and the opportunities that the future holds. The mission continues for Christikon: "to awaken and nurture faith in Christ — exploring God’s creation and the adventure of life together."
