Affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Christikon is an outdoor ministry of congregations in southern Montana and northern Wyoming. Its program includes offerings for youth, for families and adults, for at-risk kids, and for developmentally disabled adults. Christikon is a not-for-profit organization, and gifts to the camp are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Christikon may also be considered for endowment gifts, bequests, and other planned gifts.

Christikon is proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association. Developed exclusively for the camp industry, this nationally-recognized program focuses on program quality and health and safety issues, and requires us to review every facet of our operation. Christikon has voluntarily submitted to this independent appraisal done by camp experts, and has earned this mark of distinction.

Located in the Rocky Mountains of southern Montana, Christikon lies near the center of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, just north of Yellowstone National Park. Christikon operations on the Gallatin National Forest and the Custer National Forest are under permit from the Gallatin National Forest. Christikon is the last developed place along the main Boulder Road Road at an elevation of 6,500 feet above sea level. The surrounding high county ranges from 9,000 to 11,000 feet.

How You Get There

You reach Christikon by leaving Interstate 90 at Big Timber, Montana (80 miles west of Billings; 50 miles east of Bozeman). Follow the highway into town, and turn left (if you’re coming from the east) or right (if you’re coming from the west) on McLeod Street (Big Timber’s “Main Street”).  McLeod Street becomes Montana Highway 298 going south from Big Timber. The pavement ends in about 24 miles at the edge of the Gallatin National Forest; it’s another 22 miles on the Forest Service road to the camp. You’ll want to drive slowly enough to enjoy the scenery. Go until you’re sure you’ve missed us; then go about three miles farther. It takes something under two hours to make the 47-mile trip from Big Timber to camp.

Housing

Many of Christikon’s facilities are log buildings constructed for what was once a guest ranch. The main Lodge has a dining area and meeting space. There are four bath houses shared by guests. Our new Living Center started being used in 2001. Four types of housing are available during family/adult camps:

Log Cabins (8 one-room, 3 double-room). Most have wood stoves. Used for both youth campers and family/adult campers, these cabins sleep from six to ten people in bunk beds. One small cabin has a double bed. You provide your own bedding, towels, etc.

Guest Rooms. These five adjacent rooms are used during family/adult camps, and during youth sessions for adult advisors. Each has electric heat, carpeted floor, a double or queen bed, and two single beds. You provide your own bedding, towels, etc., though linens are available at extra cost.

The Living Center. Built also for use as an adult retreat center, the Living Center has six sleeping rooms (each with a queen and two single beds), four bathrooms, a Great Room with fireplace, and a kitchen/dining area. Bedding and towels are provided. The facility is used by both family/adult campers and by adult advisors during youth sessions. Those housed in the Living Center pay an additional cost over the regular camp fee. To read more about the Living Center, click here.

Your own camper, trailer, or tent. Though we have no dedicated tent/trailer sites, we reserve our limited number of level areas for those who bring their own housing with them during family/adult camps. Electrical hook-ups are available.
