Dr. Padgett's presentations: The Word of God for a Scientific World: Reading the Bible in an Age of Science.  Sessions with adults will explore the reason we evangelical believers should pay attention to modern science, why and how we still confess Scripture to be the word of God, and will give examples of how we can rightly understand key biblical texts to speak to us today.   Schedule

Continuing Education Retreat July 27-30, 2009.   Running from Monday supper through Thursday lunch, this retreat is designed particularly for rostered ministers, interested lay people, and their families.  It is sponsored jointly with the ELCA Montana Synod’s continuing education program, Northern Rockies Institute of Theology (NRIT).

Guest speakers include Dr. Alan G. Padgett, Professor of Systematic Theology, and Dr. Mark A. Throntveit, Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament, both at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. They will lead sessions for adults mornings and evenings.  Program options for children are provided during lectures, and Christikon staff hosts for each family are also available for child care at other times as well.  Afternoons are open for a variety of recreational opportunities.  Each day is bracketed by morning and evening worship. Meals are served Monday supper through Thursday  lunch. Additional special meal arrangements for July 30-31 can be made with those who plan to participate also in the following Mountain Weekend 2.  Schedule

Dr. Padgett’s presentations:  Does Christ Submit to the Church? Leadership and Submission in Following Jesus Today

1) The Bible, Submission and the Ethics of Gender Roles: Putting Christ at the Center. This lecture sets the stage with a presentation of gospel-centered biblical hermeneutics, the ethics of roles, and an overview of the debate about “complementarian” theology.

2) Does Christ submit to the Church? Jesus, leadership and the ethics of roles.  An examination of the Gospels and Epistles to focus on Christ's teaching and example regarding leadership and mutual submission.

3) But what about those other texts? A Study in Genesis and the Epistles.  A careful examination of mutual submission between women and men in Eph 5, and a critical evaluation of the claim that gender hierarchy is a “creation order” or divine command in Scripture.

Dr. Throntveit’s presentations:  Plagues, Passover, and the Precepts of Relationship: How God forged a relationship with Israel in the heart of Exodus  The Gospel of John has a unique reading of the last days of Jesus’ life. The first two sessions will examine the background of John’s understanding of Palm Sunday and the Crucifixion found in the Exodus narrative of the Ten Plagues of Egypt that culminate in the Passover. A third session will be devoted to examining what such a relational understanding of the so-called Ten “Commandments” reveals for us today. Are they really “Law?”

Costs:  $130 per adult; $65 per child 6-12, plus $130 per family NRIT fee. No charge for children under 6. Add $75 per room for those requesting Living Center housing (each of the six rooms has a queen bed and two singles.) Register

Mountain Weekend 2  July 31-August 2, 2009.   Enjoy some time in the majesty of Montana’s mountains, and join the Christikon life for a leisurely weekend at camp.  Our special guest speaker will be Mark Throntveit, Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. (Click on his name or picture to learn more about him.) Dr. Throntveit will lead sessions with adults; Christikon summer staff will join in offering options for children during the presentations, and a variety of additional program experiences for everyone. Meals are served from Friday supper through Sunday lunch. Schedule

Dr. Throntveit's presentations: Genesis: Plan, Peril, and Promise   Genesis, the first book of the Bible, already provides us with a blueprint of God's continuing relationship with us. These three sessions seek to clarify that relationship by examining Genesis 1-2 the creation, Genesis 3-11 the fall, Genesis 12-50 the covenant with Abraham and Sarah, under the categories of plan, peril, and promise.

1) Genesis 1. The Plan   Genesis 1 is a remarkably well structured blueprint for God’s intended relationship with the world.  While contemporary discussions tend to concentrate upon the initial verses in an attempt to answer the question, ?How?? the form and structure of the text invites us to concentrate upon the end of the passage as we ponder the questions of ?Who and Why??

2) Genesis 3-11. The Peril   If Genesis 1 and 2 established God’s plan for the world, Genesis 3-11 are concerned with describing how human beings have placed that plan in jeopardy. No less structured than Genesis 1, these chapters repeatedly draw our attention to the threatened relationship established in Genesis 1.

3) Genesis 12-50. The Promise   Genesis 17, God’s covenant with Abraham and Sarah, serves as a starting point for an investigation of God’s attempts to secure our threatened relationship through the mediation of blessing.

Costs:  $70 per adult, $35 per child 6-12. No charge for children under 6. Add $50 per room for those requesting Living Center housing (each of the six rooms has a queen bed and two singles.) Register.

Adult Backpacking  July 23-27 (or other dates as arranged). Christikon can host  groups of adults (couples, young adults, one-gender groups, older adults, etc.) in the magnificent mountain wilderness surrounding the camp. Your group must have at least six people, and can have no more than twelve. Two Christikon staff go with each group as leaders. Your group arrives the afternoon of July 23, stays overnight at camp for orientation and packing-out, heads into the wilderness the next morning, stays out in the back country the nights of July 24-26, and returns to Christikon the afternoon of July 27.

Your route can be tailored to your group. You may do a three-night back country loop, or you may arrange for setting up a base camp from which you day-hike (so you carry packs only the first and last days). Our staff people can lead the program; or they can work with you in shared program leadership for Bible study, Quiet Time and worship.

It would be possible for some of the group to remain on-site during the adult backpack for Mountain Weekend 1 (July 24-26), and/or to stay on for the Continuing Education Retreat (July 27-30), or even remain through Mountain Weekend 2 (July 31-August 2). See descriptions of those sessions above. It's also possible to arrange for a week-long adult backpack during one of the Mountaineers sessions for youth (July 6-12, July 14-20, July 30-August 5).

Cost: $180 per adult, or as arranged for varying durations. Contact the camp office to make arrangements.
